Besides the general University requirements and other criteria specified by the College Scientific Committee and Board, applicants for admissions into postgraduate programs in COLTECH must have good grades in relevant BSc degrees or equivalent qualifications for admissions into MSc programs and good grades in relevant MSc degrees or equivalent qualifications for admissions into PhD programs. However, candidates who have good grades in relevant Professional Master’s degrees or equivalent professional certificates in related fields maybe considered for Conversion Research MSc programs. The admission of a candidate into a program will be determined by the relevance of his/her professional diploma or equivalent certificate in the specified or related field. Consult the respective departments for specific details. The requirement for graduation in COLTECH at postgraduate level are as follows: A student admitted into the first year MSc must earn 120 credits to obtain MSc (Professional and Research). A student who holds a relevant Professional Masters degree (or equivalent certificates) and admitted into an MSc conversion program must earn 60 credits consisting of courses relating to research methodology and Dissertation work in the required conversion program to obtain a Research MSc (Consult the respective departments for specific details on the courses). However, a student who had passed with a good score / grade (at least 60%) the following courses: Biostatistics and Experimental design, Ethics in Research and Research Methodology and Scientific Writing at the qualifying Professional Master’s program may be exempted from doing these courses at the MSc Conversion level. However, the College Scientific Committee shall decide upon this. A student admitted into the first year PhD must earn 180 credits to obtain a PhD degree. Students who passed Research Methodology and Scientific Writing with a good score / grade (at least 60%) at the MSc and MSc conversion levels may be exempted from doing Research Methodology and Scientific Writing at PhD level. However, the College Scientific Committee shall decide upon this. In addition to any other regulations spelled out by the College Scientific Committee and Board, postgraduate students shall abide by the following: Be registered full-time and pursue the postgraduate program full-time over four semesters for MSc programs and six semesters for PhD programs from the date of first registration for the program (or part-time over a maximum of eight semesters for MSc and twelve semesters for PhD from the date of first registration for the program); Complete and pass all course works (including the Comprehensive Examinations for PhD students) and prepare a detailed proposal in his/her desired area of specialization as approved by the College Post Graduate Board on the recommendation of the Departmental Post Graduate Committee which must be defended orally to the Department/ College (before their Advisory Committee, Graduate lecturers and peers); for approval and validation before embarking on the research for MSc Dissertations or PhD Theses; Work under the guidance of a Supervisor(s); Submit Dissertations for MSc students or Theses for PhD students on research topics in their desired areas of specialization as approved by the College Scientific Committee on the recommendation of the Departmental Scientific Committee. The Comprehensive Examination: It is a six (06) credit-value thematic examination programmed as a second semester course to be written by PhD students after they have passed all courses in year one. The Comprehensive examination shall have two parts: Part 1 shall comprise a General knowledge paper to be written by ALL PhD students in COTECH and shall account for 40% of the final mark; Part 2 shall comprise of sections that correspond to the various programs with PhD programs in COLTECH and shall account for 60% of the final mark. Student shall be answer only the section on their PhD program of interest. MSc one year conversion; MSc (two years); PhD (three years).
